Paine Art Center and Gardens

A lumber baron’s Tudor revival house, the Paine Art Center and Gardens (1410 Algoma Blvd., 920/235-6903, 11am-4pm Tues.-Sun., $9 adults) displays meticulously appointed rooms showcasing period furnishings and antiques, along with 19th-century French Barbizon and U.S. art. Outside are acres and acres of gardens; one, modeled after the Dutch Pond Garden at Hampton Court in England, features more than 100 varieties of roses. Legend has it the place is haunted, but the caretakers disavow any knowledge.

THE REPUBLIC OF WINNECONNE

In 1967 the state of Wisconsin issued its annual highway map. Puzzled tavern-goers in Winneconne—west of Oshkosh—tried to find their village. It was gone, absent, forgotten, ignored.

With tongues in cheek, the village board voted to secede from the state; then it declared war. The new Republic of Winneconne’s banner boasted: “We like it—where?” To which the governor, in Madison, said in jest, “By the way, where is Winneconne?” The brouhaha continued as the little village that wouldn’t be ignored went through the machinations of recreating itself as a sovereign nation. They’ve never been overlooked since.
